La técnica fue sistematizada por el Dr. Teruo Higa en la Universidad de las Ryukyus en Okinawa en la década de 1980, junto con su trabajo de inoculante de microorganismos efectivos (EM).\

El bokashi fue adoptado con fuerza en toda América Latina en los años 90 y 2000. EMBRAPA, INTA Costa Rica y la agricultura de pequeños productores colombianos lo adoptaron y lo adaptaron a insumos locales: melaza de caña, cascarilla de arroz, estiércol de pollo, biocarbón, microbios nativos del bosque en lugar de EM importados.&#x20;

A estas alturas, la *versión latinoamericana* es una práctica regional genuinamente distinta: recetas diferentes, sustratos diferentes, a menudo anaerobia y luego aerobia en lugar de estrictamente anaerobia.
